Subject: Blessed Hurricane Surprise
Friday morning before leaving for work, Roger noticed some baby squirrels down at the base of the tree (that later blew over on top of our house during the hurricane). He had to take a second look because they were WHITE. There were 2 albino squirrels. They were just babies that had a nest with their mom up in our tree. Their mom was regular color. Roger took a picture of one of them as it was drinking water out of our pond. You have to look real close because it looks like one of the stones. Around 6:00 last evening while we were preparing for the hurricane, we noticed the mother was trying to retreive 3 babies back up into the nest before the storm. She could only get one (brown)and couldn't get the two white ones. Roger (bless his heart), went out with the net and gathered them up, we made them a box with some shread and a warm towel to ride out the storm. This morning, we saw the mother drinking from the pond, probably wondering where her babies were, thinking they didn't make it thru the storm. We decided to let them go back with her. Roger took the box outside, the both jumped out, excited to be free and finally back with their mom. (so we thought.), One ran right up the tree, the wrong tree, but later realized the mistake. The other one ran into our neighbors garage (they have a cat), and ended up under their clothes dryer. That was this morning. Roger wasn't able to get him out until around 5 this evening. Obviously shook up from all the happenings, we again brought him inside, gave him water to drink from an eye dropper. Surely he was dehydrated from spending the day under the dryer....I went up to the pet store and got some kitten supplement milk to feed him thru the night. What an incredible animal. We have never seen anything like it before. I went online to find out about albino squirrels and there are actually several websites dedicated to those types of squirrels. They even have their own protective society. We will nurse this little one a while longer to see how he does. We have named him "Charley". What a blessed hurricane surprise. Love to you all, Patty
